When you listen to two different but very close sound frequencies through headphones, the brain attempts to find the middle ground
between those frequencies and entrains on the frequency in between them.
For example if you listen to a sound frequency of 90hz in one ear
and a frequency of 100hz in the other ear, the brain will
entrain on the middle frequency 95hz. This "third beat" phenomena is known in science as a frequency
followed response. Your brainwaves seek and entrain on that frequency
and will try to sync with it. This is a process called brainwave entrainment.
In binaural beat recordings, music or white noise is combined with those frequencies so that you won't hear the binaural tones. The music is all you hear but the binaural beats are still there doing their work.
