Delta, Theta, Beta, and Alpha Brainwave Frequencies

Brainwave Frequencies

The brainwave frequencies used in binaural beat recordings can be compartmentalized into four main groups. Starting from the lowest frequency and going to the highest, they are Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta. Inside of each one of these brainwave ranges are dozens of frequency manipulations that one can choose from. These binaural beat frequencies can be used to influence the brain, body, and mind in a number of ways.

Every person cycles through these brainwave frequencies throughout a normal day. We can’t normally tap into the most efficient frequencies however (Alpha, Theta, and Delta) because we’re asleep or almost asleep by them time our brain gets there. Binaural beats allow us to tune in to those frequencies without falling asleep. It is possible to reach those brainwave frequencies without binaural beats but it would take months of meditation and practice to be able to do it. Binaural beats allow us to reach those frequencies almost instantly.

All of these frequencies, and the effects they have on the brain have been studied by scientists over the past 40 years, mainly accredited to Robert Monroe of The Monroe Institute. From the extensive research done and on the strength of Monroes’ findings, he concluded that inducing brainwave frequencies through the use of binaural beats causes a wide range of effects. But Monroe is definitely not alone in his findings. There are lots of other scientists that have also noted that these lower brainwave frequencies are accompanied by deep tranquility, flashes of creative insight, euphoria, intensely focused attention, enhanced learning abilities, spiritual awareness, and so much more.

Here is a list of the Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta frequencies and the effects of them under the influence of binaural beats that have been scientifically researched:
Delta Frequencies:

The slowest brainwave frequencies are Delta. This is the brainwave pattern that we reach when we are in a deep sleep. It’s also the dominant brainwave patterns of infants. The frequencies in the Delta group range from 0.1Hz to 3.9Hz. In these frequencies our bodies are healing, repairing itself, and growing. This is the state where there is a total loss of body awareness and physical surroundings. Delta is also the greatest state to access the subconscious mind and when binaural beats are most powerful. Binaural beats in the Delta frequency range can be used for improving sleep, curing insomnia, aiding suppressed emotional issues, improving sense of over all well being, reaching extremely deep meditations, pain release, and various other things.
Theta Frequencies:

Considered the most powerful of all the frequencies, the Theta group ranges from 4Hz to 7.9Hz. These brainwave frequencies are called the storehouse of creativity and spiritual insight. This is our brainwave frequencies when we are dreaming. It’s almost impossible for an adult to reach Theta frequencies without falling asleep or using binaural beats unless they are experienced meditators, but these frequencies can be found in awake children all the way up to the age 13. When one reaches Theta frequencies there are a variety of effects. You become much more spiritually aware and have a feeling of complete inner peace. You move beyond just the knowledge of knowing and become more aware of your inner guidance. In a way you become less self-conscious and operate at a more intuitive level.

Binaural beats in the Theta frequency range are used for all sorts of different things. Some of them include improving learning and memory abilities, increasing creativity, changing behavior or addiction problems, transforming unconsciously held limiting beliefs, physical and emotional healing, getting rid of fear, and relaxing. Theta can also be used for more spiritual things like out-of-body experiences (astral projection), deep meditations, remote viewing, telepathy, improving psychic abilities, and reaching higher states of consciousness.

When we become more relaxed, our brainwave frequencies slow down into the Alpha group. This ranges from 8Hz to 13.9Hz. Alpha frequencies are also associated with what writers, musicians, artists, and athletes refer to as, being “in the zone” or “in the moment.” It’s also the state when we are daydreaming or reading. There’s often an euphoric, effortless feeling of “flow” as the doer is absorbed in the activity and subject. Binaural beats that use Alpha brainwave frequencies are for things like relaxing, super-learning, intense focusing, light mediation, and increasing serotonin. The Alpha frequencies are also the beginning of tapping into the subconscious mind.
Beta Frequencies:

Beta brainwave frequencies are the most active of them all. It ranges from 14Hz to 30Hz but can exceed this. These are the normal frequency of waking consciousness, the taking in and evaluating of data received through the senses, and active thought process. It is associated with concentration, arousal, alertness, motivation, survival, problem solving and cognition. But Beta can also be associated with negative things like anxiety, stress, disease, frustration, worry, anger, and fear. Beta binaural beats are used for increasing energy, improving decision making, giving you motivation, and improved alertness. Most of all binaural beats, at least the good ones anyways, will start the brainwave frequencies at Beta and slowly shift them to the desired effects no matter what kind they are. This is because it’s much easier for the brain to start at Beta and slowly transition to the Alpha, Theta, and Delta frequencies then to try and instantly reach them.

There are frequencies that binaural beats use that well exceed the 30Hz range though. Some scientist call them high Beta, while others call them Gamma (40Hz – 70 Hz). They are used for a variety of effects on the brain, but there is not enough scientific research to prove or disprove any of these effects. Learn more about Gamma Binaural Beats.

Binaural beats use all of these different frequencies to influence the brain and reach the desired effects. You won’t find just one type of frequency range in these recordings either. They use multiple frequencies and combinations of frequencies to ensure you get the full experience and benefits. For example, in order for lucid dreaming binaural beats to work they must use all the different frequencies to put you to sleep, make you dream, and then finally wake your conscious mind back up just enough so that you know your dreaming but you don’t wake up yet. This is why it’s important to get only quality binaural beats that are scientifically researched and engineered.

How Do Binaural Beats Work?

When you listen to two different but very close sound frequencies through headphones, the brain attempts to find the middle ground between those frequencies and entrains on the frequency in between them.

For example if you listen to a sound frequency of 90hz in one ear and a frequency of 100hz in the other ear, the brain will entrain on the middle frequency 95hz. This "third beat" phenomena  is known in science as a frequency followed response. Your brainwaves seek and entrain on that frequency and will try to sync with it. This is a process called brainwave entrainment.

In binaural beat recordings, music or white noise is combined with those frequencies so that you won't hear the binaural tones. The music is all you hear but the binaural beats are still there doing their work.

Negative Behaviors and Binaural Beats

Everybody has a negative behavior that they would like to eliminate from their lives.

It might be something that is life affecting like a cigarette smoking habit, abuse of alcohol, or an over the counter drug addiction. It also might be something less risky but super annoying like being a nail biter.

If your willpower alone hasn’t helped and it seems like  there is just no solution in sight, I recommend looking at brainwave entrainment recordings to help you deal with these behaviors.
